A dental crown can restore a tooth to its original size and shape after injury, extensive decay, or certain dental treatments like root canals. If you’ve been scheduled to receive your first dental crown, you might experience some anxiety or wonder if the procedure will hurt. Here’s what you can expect during the procedure and some tips for navigating the recovery period afterward.

What Are Dental Crowns?

Dental crowns are thin coverings designed to be cemented on top of compromised teeth. Modern crowns are typically made of porcelain or ceramic, allowing them to imitate the color, luster, and shape of natural teeth. This produces a lifelike restoration that can allow an injured tooth to appear complete and function normally. Dental crowns are sometimes used as anchors for other restorations such as dental bridges.

How Are Dental Crowns Placed?

Dental crowns are typically placed over two appointments. During the first one, your dentist will examine the tooth being treated and the surrounding area. They will probably take X-rays to provide more information about the underlying bone and tissue structure. Your dentist will then apply a local anesthetic that makes the whole process painless before filing down the tooth to make room. They will then take a bite impression to provide the precise measurements needed to manufacture a well-fitting crown. You will then receive a temporary crown to protect the tooth until the next appointment.

The second appointment will take place after your dentist receives your completed crown. They will remove the temporary crown, check to make sure the new one fits properly and matches the color of the rest of your teeth, and then cement it into place. Your crown can last for fifteen years or more with excellent care and maintenance.

What Is the Recovery Period Like?

The recovery period after getting a dental crown should be relatively short. Your dentist will provide you with aftercare instructions. You may experience some soreness, but this discomfort can be treated with over-the-counter pain medication. You may also want to try rinsing your mouth with lukewarm saltwater. As you get used to your dental crown, it will feel more and more normal over time. If your bite still feels uncomfortable after a few days or if you still have lingering pain, contact your dentist.

Getting a dental crown is nothing to be afraid of. It can restore your teeth to their original beauty and have you smiling comfortably again within a few weeks of your first appointment. Consulting with your dentist can determine if you are a good candidate for a dental crown.
